An annotated excerpt of General Order No. 3—originally issued in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865—printed on a short-sleeved t-shirt in papyrus, a palette that blends soft parchment tones with deep bloodline red.

This design reflects on the power of information: how it moves, who it reaches, and what is at stake when it’s altered, erased, or withheld. The children featured on the front symbolize both the vulnerability and strength of shared knowledge—reminding us that literacy, archiving, and memory are not just privileges, but responsibilities.

This shirt invites us to consider factual information as both a tool and a treasure: something that should be widely accessible, yet handled with care. It honors the sacredness of our stories and the importance of preserving primary sources—not just for remembrance, but for protection against misrepresentation.

The artwork features a custom painting by Houston native, painter, archivist, and professor Mitchell Reece, created in collaboration with Blacks of Are.na to honor Juneteenth through a deeply reflective and historically grounded lens.

This gift is a collaboration between Blacks of Are.na and Are.na, in celebration of Juneteenth (c. 2025). Learn more about this item’s origins in our editorial post.
